Letters [manuscript] : to Thomi Pitot, Port Louis, Mauritius. 1806-1814.

Xerox copies of thirteen letters written between 1806 and 1814 by Matthew Flinders to Thomi Pitot of Port Louis, Mauritius. They document Flinders' captivity on Mauritius between 1804 and 1810 and the period prior to his death in England in 1814. Added February 1979: Notice biographique sur Robert Edouard Pitot (1860) by C. Baissac (photocopy).

Flinders was a captain in the navy, hydrographer and discoverer. On 24 Jan. 1801 he was given command of HM Sloop Investigator, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander, for the purpose of surveying the coast of Australia.
